Emory Consult

I didn’t know what to expect. Austin picked me up from work and we rode together to Emory. I was nervous about the appointment, Austin was nervous because he hates driving in Atlanta (thank goodness Emory is only half a mile from my work and on the same street) and also probably a little nervous about the appointment as well. After finding our way through the parking garage, then the 19 story medical building, we made it. I had a little bit of paperwork to fill out and within 5 minutes we were called back. We met with 5 different people while we were there, Residents, doctors, nurses, and coordinators. We were fed an abundance of information. It was a little overwhelming but overall I left feeling really good and hopeful!

Dr. Austin Schimer is the doctor assigned to me. I really liked him. He was very through and explained things in a way me and Austin could both clearly understand. He looked through my lab results, that were taken back in October at my OBGYN, which consisted of my blood glucose (normal range), AMH which is my egg reserve(lots of eggs!!), and TSH which is my thyroid (normal). So far great news! There were a few more tests that he wanted to look at so they took labs while I was there. Currently the main concern is I am not having a cycle and I am not ovulating. Dr. Schimer prescribed progesterone to jump start my cycle. I will take this every month for 10 days at a time. 10 days on and 20 days off. This is supposed to regulate my cycle. Once I start my period I will go in for an ultrasound and also an HSG test. The HSG test is where they will use a catheter to go through my cervix and shoot a blue dye through my cervix and fallopian tubes. This is to make sure I do not have anything blocking my tubes. It is a quick procedure that is done in a matter of 3 minutes and the results are instant. That’s all the initial testing for me! Austin will be having a sperm analysis within the next few weeks; just to rule out anything on his end. They want to catch anything in the beginning so that we do not run into any surprises and we can take the right steps from the get-go.

If all is well with my tubes and also Austins test, we will start Letrozole and an HCG trigger shot within the next 4 to 5 weeks. Letrozole is a pill I will take for 5 days at the beginning of my cycle. Emory will monitor me through ultrasounds to make sure I have a follicle or egg that is going to release. They will be able to pin point it down to the day. The day before ovulation I will take the trigger shot at home, which works with the Letrozole to make me ovulate. Dr. Schimer is very positive and seems to think getting me to ovulate is going to be “easy”. So overall we received really good news! Now we wait for the blood work to come back and my period to start so that we can get the HSG and ultrasound done.
